Do Meta Tags still have some value?
A:
Times when abuse of Meta tags has been used to unethically manipulate search engine spiders have late gone. In case someone is not
aware of what a Meta tag is, this contextual information is placed in the header of each individual web page which is not visible
to the visitors. In the early stages of search engines, many webmasters have realized that by repeating their targeted keywords
in the Meta Keyword tag, they could easily reach top ten rankings which after all were counterattacked by more advanced algorithms
developed by major search engines.
The worst case scenarios were when webmasters were stuffing keywords in the Meta keyword tag which were not related to the actual
content of their websites. Now Meta tags are not among the most important factors and they have been devalued in the process of
determining position in search engine listings. It is still advisable to use them but with limited information in their content.
One good example is the Meta description tag usually reaching 160 characters in length and most of the time appears in SERP
listings under the title tag. Read Danny Sullivan's article about the death of Meta tags in October 2002.
