Common used SEO and internet marketing related terms
'click through rate (CTR)'
Internet marketers are using this measurement which is a percentage value showing the effectiveness of a link, how many times a
link has been clicked from total number of views.
'cloaking'
This is a way of showing visitors other content than to search engines. Usually a script tracks the spider of the search engines
and directs it to other webpage with other content than the original. It can be dangerous as chances to get banned by search
engines are very high.
'conversion rate (CR)'
It is the percentage of those visitors who have completed a desirable action on a particular website. For example if a website's
daily traffic is 100 visitors and 12 have purchased a product or service then the conversion rate is 12%.
'cost per click (CPC or PPC)'
It is actually the same as PPC (pay per click). The cost per click is the amount of money spent for an ad host (Google's AdWords)
for a click.
'cost per lead (CPL)'
The total number of advertisement costs divided by the total number of leads generated by the ad campaign.
'cost per thousand (CPM)'
Usually used in the banner advertising. You are paying for one thousand impressions (views) regardless of the results.
(M=Roman numeral for 1000).
'crawler'
Also known as spider, it collects information on web pages. The crawler or spider, follows the links on the web pages, gathers the
content found and delivers them to search engines' huge databases.
'cross linking'
Most often it refers to a family or category of websites usually having the same owner and which are linked to each other with the
main scope to inflate link popularity. It is not a wise idea especially if there are many websites when search engines might
panelise you.
'cascading style sheet (CSS)'
This is a very advantageous ad-on for HTML helping rendering pages more accurately. There can be created custom CSS styles by
designers which will make change the appearance of a website very easily.
